What is the Ketogenic Diet?

The idea of the Ketogenic Diet is to have a low carb diet consisting of only proteins and fats. Essentially cutting back on all carbohydrates that take awhile to digest such as sodas, sugary sweets, and breads. Consuming less than 50 grams of carbs a day forces your body to use up that fuel a lot quicker. Whereas if you consume more than 50 grams your body needs 3 to 4 days to fully break them down. Doing this causes you to breakdown protein and fat for energy, which the goal being to make you lose weight. This diet can also help those suffering from epilepsy, certain brain diseases, heart disease and even help with the cause of acne. This diet is aimed for those looking to lose weight and fast. Within the first 3 to 6 months you can lose several pounds compared to other diets. The ketogenic diet is found to help those lose weight in the first six months so effectively and fast due to the fact that it takes more calories to change fat into energy then it does to change carbs into energy. This diet also is said to satisfy you more because it’s high-fat and high-protein diet which makes you eat less and keeps you full for longer periods of time. Insulin in your body allows you to store it’s sugars however, the keto diet allows you to burn through this fuel quickly so you don’t need to store it. This means that your body needs and makes insulin less frequently. Allowing for lower insulin and a higher consumption of fat on the body helps to prevent heart disease. By raising the amount of fat you consume you can also be raising good cholesterol and lowering bad cholesterol. This is said to come from the result of your body producing less amounts of insulin when you are consuming such a high intake of fat. This also means that you are less likely to have high blood pressure, hardened arteries, and heart failure it’s unclear by doing the keto diet how long your body will have lower levels of insulin and therefore prevent against high blood pressure and heart disease.
