Donald Trump Jr. was sent a package with a mysterious white powder in it, but it didn’t quite reach him; his wife, Vanessa, opened it for him. (For an in-depth look at the story, here is the Bloomberg’s piece)
To understand the implications of this, we must look back to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A week after the attack on the Twin Towers, letters containing anthrax, a white powder, were mailed to two U.S. Senators as well as U.S. News organizations. These letters ended up killing five.
With this context, you can understand how terrifying it would be to receive one of these letters, especially as someone who is constantly in the spotlight, and hated by so many.
Many on Twitter feel little sympathy for the mother of five.
User @NaomiMLloyd responded: “Sadly the white powder was clearly meant for @DonaldJTrumpJr. Dammit they missed. Keep trying!”
I could list the countless other tweets that condoned, even encouraged, this attack, but I’d rather not give them the attention they clearly want.
I’m not a Trump supporter. I don’t agree with Donald Jr.’s philosophies either. But this is not how you fight them.
This is how you further divide an already split country.
If someone did this to Obama, these same people would be enraged at how insane an attack this was. They’d be demanding this person be thrown in jail, and I bet they’d be saying things like, “This is a bipartisan issue. Terrorist attacks are wrong no matter who they target.”
If you think you’d treat both situations the same, prove it: “‘White powder’ is sent to President Obama’s DC office just 24 hours after Don and Vanessa Trump received a similar package”
If you want to make a difference in how this country is run, there are so many ways to do it that don’t involve assassinating a human person with a family:
- Vote (that includes local elections)
- Go to marches
- Talk about the issues
- Get informed
- Support those who share your ideologies
- Educate others
- Donate your time and money
- Help support bipartisan news outlets
I wish I didn’t have to write this, but most importantly: Don’t kill people.
